Sun Ra Arkestra Makes It to Jazz at Lincoln Center
This appreciation by Seth Colter Walls in the New York Review of Books takes note of the recent debut of Sun Ra’s Arkestra, under Marshall Allen, in a tribute to Sun Ra, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. John Szwed noted in his biography of Sun Ra, Space is the Place, that Lincoln Center didn’t seem quite ready to open its doors to a Sun Ra tribute during his lifetime — at least on this planet. (Szwed did note that Sun Ra played a solo concert at Lincoln Center, and alludes to a gig at Alice Tully Hall.} We, and the New York Review, are glad that Jazz at Lincoln Center is now ready to pay tribute to Sun Ra, and to recognize his contributions to jazz history.
