Bobby Hutcherson at Juan-les-Pins 1969
This performance of “Herzog,” by the Bobby Hutcherson-Harold Land Quintet with Stanley Cowell, Reggie Johnson and Joe Chambers comes from the Antibes Jazz Festival in July 1969. This amazing band existed for two years (1968-69), worked all too infrequently and made two magnificent albums for Blue Note (“Spiral” & “Medina”) which were not released until 1980. When I combined them on one CD in Blue Note’s Connoisseur Series in the ‘90s. Bobby, who rarely listens to his own recordings, called me and said he could not believe the level of material and musicianship in that band. Cherish this.
